PROPOSAL DRAFT – CH. 1

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The general objective is to examine the effect of…

↳ Are you investigating or examining? The title says one, the objectives the other.

↳ What is the knowledge gap: what is known, and what is unknown?

↳ Justify your sampling formula for this sector.

Real examiner comments. Every one is in the toolkit, with how to answer it.

THE PROBLEM

Most panel comments are not surprises.

Sit through a few proposal defences and the same comments come up again and again: a title that says one thing while the objectives say another, a gap that is never named, a sampling technique nobody justified, instruments missing from the appendix.

None of these are about how clever your study is. They are about preparation. This toolkit shows you exactly where panels look, so you can fix the issues before you submit and answer calmly on the day.

Panels want you to succeed. Their job is to make sure your study will hold up to PhD-level rigour before you spend two years in the field. Go in prepared and the defence becomes free expert consulting.

WHAT’S INSIDE

Everything from “date confirmed” to “proposal approved”.

01

Understanding the defence

Who is in the room, how the session runs, what examiners are really assessing, and the four possible outcomes.

02

Six-week countdown plan

Week-by-week checklists, from getting your school’s rules to your final timed run-through.

03

15-minute presentation blueprint

A 16-slide plan with timings, what to show, and the question each slide pre-empts. Plus backup slides.

04

60-question bank

Questions for Chapters 1–3 and feasibility, each with what it tests, a strong answer framework and space for your own answer.

05

Answering techniques

The PAUSE method, five question types, what to say when you don’t know, and how to stay composed with a tough examiner.

06

Pre-defence self-audit

A consistency matrix that catches mismatches across chapters, plus content and formatting checklists.

07

Mock defence kit

A run sheet, roles for your mock panel, and an examiner scoring sheet to find weak answers early.

08

Day-of checklist

What to pack, online defence set-up, conduct in the room, and what to do in the first two hours after.

09

Corrections matrix

A ready “Response to the Panel” template and the typical path from corrections to clearance.

A LOOK INSIDE THE QUESTION BANK

Not just the questions. What each one tests, and how to build your answer.

QuestionWhat it testsStrong answer framework
What is the knowledge gap: what is known and what is unknown?Originality“Studies X, Y, Z established ___; none examined ___ in ___ context using ___.”

This toolkit is for you if…

  • you are a PhD or research Master’s candidate with a proposal or concept-paper defence coming up
  • your proposal follows the three-chapter format: Introduction, Literature Review and Methodology
  • you want to know what examiners will ask, not just general “stay calm” advice
  • you have a few weeks, or even a few days, and need a plan

It is not…

  • a substitute for your supervisors or your university’s postgraduate regulations, which always come first
  • a proposal-writing service: you do the work, the toolkit shows you where to look
  • written for your final thesis defence (though much of it still helps)

WHO MADE IT

Built by someone still writing her own PhD.

I’m Grace Njeri-Otieno, a PhD candidate in Kenya working in health economics since 2013, and the editor of Resourceful Scholars’ Hub. This toolkit grew out of the proposal defences I sat in on and wrote about on the Hub, cross-checked against university defence guidelines.

It is the guide I wish I’d had: practical, plain, and focused on what panels actually ask.

QUESTIONS

Before you buy

Will this match my university’s defence format?

The toolkit follows the most common format: a 15–20 minute presentation, examiner questions, then a closed deliberation. It tells you exactly what to confirm with your own school, such as time limits, slide rules and referencing style, because your regulations always come first.

Does it work for qualitative and mixed-methods studies?

Yes. The Chapter 3 questions cover research philosophy, design, sampling, instruments, ethics and analysis for any approach. Some questions, such as model diagnostics, apply mainly to quantitative studies.

I’m a Master’s student. Is it useful for me?

Yes, if you are defending a research proposal. The questions are pitched at PhD level, which is good practice for any panel.

How do I receive it?

You get an instant download link after checkout: a PDF to read and print, and an editable workbook version so you can type your answers into the question bank and templates.

My defence is in a few days. Is it too late?

No. Start with the question bank and the answering techniques, then use the day-of checklist. The countdown plan shows how to compress your preparation.

What if it isn’t right for me?
